"Here and Now" Group Guidelines

by Caroline Thorpe (28th August 1997)

"Here and Now" groups have recently become popular at CCI (UK) residential workshops, though they are not co-counselling workshops themselves. They are so named to distinguish them from co-counselling workshops which usually focus on archaic distress within the client. By contrast "Here and Now" groups focus on the interpersonal process between participants as it is experienced now. Here are some guidelines:
  1. no more than 12 people (possibly 15)
  2. enough 'experienced people' to support the 'process'
  3. workshops on other themes should run concurrently so that participants have a real choice and have chosen it
  4. workshops running over several sessions need not be closed (ie some participants may leave at the end of a session and others may join at the start of another).
  5. Further definition of what the 'process' is or could be should be encouraged to enable less experienced 'here and nowers' to join more easily.
  6. As a starter, the process includes
    1. staying in the Here and now
    2. moving to closeness through expressing feelings
